The American Dream in Franklin’s Autobiography and Hawthorne’s My Kinsman, Major Molineux :: My Kinsman, Major Molineux

Benjamin Franklin and Nathaniel Hawthorne were both very important to America’s early literature. Franklin’s â€Å"Autobiography† and Hawthorne’s â€Å"My Kinsman, Major Molineux† represents the extremes of leaving home. Franklin makes accomplishing the American dream of the self-made man look easy. Hawthorne, however, revises and critiques that dream, showing the harsh realities of the real world. Franklin reveals his life story as a way to show the people of America that determination, hard work, and intelligence lead to success, while Hawthorne describes the harsh world waiting once youth and innocence are gone.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Benjamin Franklin and Robin, Hawthorne’s main character, leave home for different reasons. Franklin, in his autobiography, explains how he journeys to Philadelphia in search of a job and to start life on his own. Franklin wants independence and he knows he will find what he seeks. Franklin states, â€Å"I took it upon me to assert my Freedom† (194). Robin leaves his home with the idea of depending on his second cousin, dependence not independence. Robin journeys from his family’s country farm to the city in search of his kinsman, Major Molineux, with hopes that his kinsman will help him get started in life. Hawthorne writes, â€Å"The Major†¦ had thrown out hints respecting the future establishment of one of them in life. It was therefore determined that Robin should profit by his kinsman’s generous intentions† (801). Franklin and Robin’s arrival to the new towns embody the two author’s feelings toward the idea of the self made man.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Franklin and Robin arrival to their new destinations are drastically different. Franklin arrives in Philadelphia during the day, hungry, and dirty. Franklin’s determination keeps him going. He buys bread to eat, cleans himself up, and sets out straight away to find himself a job. He finds one within short time, â€Å"I return’d to Bradford’s who gave me a little job to do for the present, and there I lodged and dieted† (198). Franklin represents his arrival in Philadelphia as brightly and easy as it could possibly be, the people are nice, it is beautiful day, and he finds exactly what he wants, when he wants it. Hawthorne sees Franklin’s story as an abomination of the real world. Hawthorne stages Robin’s arrival to town at night, symbolizing the darkness of the harsh world. Robin also encounters nothing but paltry inhabitants of the town as he searches for his kinsman. Robin feels no joy as he journeys through the town, an d he even experiences fear at all of the strange things that he encounters.

Narrative Essay — The Birth of my Daugher

It was day like any other day, one that revolved around me and my wants and needs, but all that was about to change. The sun was shining through my bedroom window of the small two bedroom apartment that was shared between me and my roommate. The day was a nice enough day for all to enjoy. With temperatures in the 80's and not a cloud in the beautiful Carolina blue sky, who wouldn't want to enjoy a day like that? Not me. Not when I was nine months pregnant, with only seven days till doom's day and whale (yep, spelled it that way on purpose) past the 25-35 pounds suggest by my doctor that I should gain.I was sick from not being able to stomach even the thought of food, which was unusual for me and was starting to have some pains in my abdomen but had brushed it off, thinking it was due to the nausea. It didn't take long to realize that the baby I was carrying was ready to meet me when the back pains started to become regular and more intense. As I laid on the beautifully crafted gold a nd burgundy comforter that was spread over my bed, I started to fell pressure in my lower back. It was as if someone was taking dull knives and running them deep in to my muscles along the top of my tailbone.There was no doubting the fact that my labor had started when I got up and noticed that same elegant comforter was now forever stained. My water had broke causing the pains to bring me to my knees. With tears in my eyes, I was ready for some relief from the pain and wanted to get to the hospital in order to get an epideral(wonderful things that make you numb from the waist down). It didn't take long to get to the hospital, especially since the ride was in an ambulance. Thanks to my roommate who dialed 911 in a moment of panic; hers' not mine, she deemed it necessary to dail 911 and request assistance.If that is what you would call a request, screaming at the top of your lungs at the 911 dispatcher. The pain had become unbearable and I was forever thankful when I was told by the mid-wife that it was time to start pushing the baby out. Two minutes later at 12:37pm on a bright Tuesday afternoon, my daughter was born. She seemed so small and fragile but the effect was immeasurable. Lynssa Grace Girma Adugna, 6lbs. 5oz. 20 1/5in. Her hair was so shiny that it looked brown with touches of gold thrown in here and there. Her eyes were such a deep, dark blue that they look like the ocean at night.She was breathtaking. When our eyes met for the first time I felt my heart skip a beat. As I held that tiny bundle, that was just as much a part of me as I was a part of her, my mind was in awe of how much I immediately felt such an overwhelming amount of love for her. The kind of love that I felt in that moment was instant and was more intense then any emotion I had every felt. I never knew that this kind of love was possible, to be able to love something or someone the way that I loved her. I knew then that I would go to any lengths to make her happy and to give her ever ything that she every needed.I swore to give her my absolute best and I meant every word. My entire existence had been meaningless up until then, or at least everything I had every accomplished felt like it failed in comparison to her, my daughter. I had never knew that there was an emptiness in my heart until this completeness replaced where there once was a void. When my daughter came home the â€Å"real world† begun. I traded nights with the girls for a night with the most important girl, and nights out with friends, to midnight feedings and diaper changes. These times were stressful without a doubt.Although all I needed to make them worth the work was a glimpse of her smile. Which she would give while she was sleeping. I am told that babies are dreaming about angels when they smile like that. These late nights were hard to handle when they were followed with early morning wake up calls which gave way to a morning full of much needed errands. My life was no longer my own. Life now circled around this tiny little human which I was trusted to take care of . Before Lynssa came along, I was not the one who you could find in a church pew on Sunday. You did good to see me on the holidays such as Christmas and Easter for that matter.Now that I was responsible for someone else's mortal soul, it seemed very important to get back in church and to teach her the same values that were instilled in me. So now you can be sure where to find me on Sunday. I wanted to be sure to incorporate Christian values and beliefs into my child's heart and mind, and the only way to do that was to but them back into mine. Even though my child is very young and not likely to remember these times, somehow I still believe that it is important to behave a certain way. I also changed not only my outlook on life but also my outward appearance as well.I begin thinking in ways that would have never come to mind before had my daughter never been born into this world. There was not only the fact that I was a mother now that changed me but also the fact that I was the mother of an impressionable young girl was what affected me in a way that I never though possible. I wanted her to be everything that was good and right about me and none of what was wrong with me. I decided that the best way to teach her these things was to lead by example, and with a little hope and a lot a prayers she would follow. I needed to be the mother that my child could be proud of.Nobody's perfect and I sure do have a long way to go before I can even be close to being where I want to be in life. I am still learning. Learning new things everyday. Changing for the better a little everyday is my goal. To always be that person, striving to be the best mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend and student that I can possibly be. That's who I am. I would never be the person that I am today if I had not received an award so great as that of motherhood. In the Crato, Plato seems to argue that disobeying the law can never be justified. I strongly disagree with this statement, while laws serve a purpose in maintaining stability, it is part of human nature to act on personal interest and some laws do not always favor one’s action regardless if it’s justifiable. If a law is preventing certain people or groups from achiveing their interest in survival, equality, and success, than it should be considered justifiable when disobeyed. The notion in forming a society is to preserve freedom and security, without these qualities, than society would be likely to fail. The Circle had spent the last week translating Black John’s book in bits and pieces from the pages Cassie had copied; maybe someone had stumbled onto something important. Cassie preferred that theory to the alternative: that something terrible had happened. But how would Cassie and Melanie escape from the classroom now without drawing suspicion? It looked like it had been taken from far away, maybe on a cell phone – it had a grainy surveillance look to it. It was from after the power had gone out, and it looked like Deborah and Suzan had used magic to light their way in the dark. But the most disturbing part was that over Suzan’s and Deborah’s faces, the photo was stamped with the mark of the hunter. Cassie turned the photo around so the whole Circle could see it. â€Å"Now almost half of us are marked,† she said. â€Å"How did this happen?† Melanie asked, examining the photograph. â€Å"This was taken the night of the dance. These methodologies have extremely important significance in better organization of the project as these present a streamlined approach for all the activities during the project timeline. These methodologies also suggest measures to overcome the challenges during the project such as those related to budget issues, schedule overrun and other potential risks. Project Methodologies Waterfall methodology for project management comprises of defined stages for carrying out the same. The stages that are present in a Waterfall based approach include Initiation and Planning, Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Testing, Monitoring and Closure. The flow moves on to the next stage only when the one prior to it has been successfully completed. Agile project management methodology on the other hand is a value based approach that is incremental and iterative in nature. It is carried out in the several iterations or sprints and involves customer feedback throughout. The risks such as scope creeps, schedule overrun, technological changes, resource scarcity and many others are the responsibilities of the PM and are held accountable for the resolution of the same. The role of PM in case of PRINCE2 is more of a mediator between the board members or the senior officials and the team members. The cycle of reporting an issue flows from team members who report it to their respective Project Managers and the PM takes it forward to the senior management who discusses and come up with a resolution and the same flows back to the team via PM (Collet, 2016). Feasibility study is considered to be an important phase in PMBOK (Rankins, 2016). Feasibility study is not covered in this case Terminology and documentation varies between the two. For instance, project initiation phase includes Project Charter Document. Project initiation phase includes Project Brief document. Project life cycle and project methodology Project Life Cycle (PLC) comprises of well defined project stages right from the beginning till the end of the project. Stages such as initiation, planning, delivery and closure form an important part of PLC. PRINCE2 methodology and its methods are extremely close to the stages of PLC. It begins with the project initiation that determines the objectives and goals of the project along with the project brief and risks estimation. Planning, directing and controlling stages define the methods that need to be adapted for successful project management which finally leads to the project delivery and closure (www.advantagelearning.co.uk, 2016). PMBOK also adheres to the stages of PLC but has its own set of methods which are termed as phases. The first phase in PMBOK methodology is the initiation phase which includes the feasibility study of the project. Next comes the planning phase which includes scope definition, activity planning, stakeholder identification, resource allocation, budget estimation, schedule estimation and risk assessment. It is then followed by the execution phase which involves the activities that are related for the development of the project as per the requirements. There may be a number of challenges that may appear in this phase and the same are handled by the methods defined in PMBOK to manage the same. Next phase is the control phase. There may be a number of changes that may arise in terms of implementation and resource activities. These changes are managed and effectively controlled in this phase of PMBOK. The last in the list is the closure phase which marks the completion of the project. The two project management methodologies viz. PMBOK and PRINCE2 have their own benefits and cons. It depends upon a number of factors which marks the selection or preference of one of these methodologies for a particular project.
